Man Wanted

For now, living alone is usually fine. I like coming home to a quiet house after work. I like listening to the radio at 5:30 a.m. without bothering anyone. I like being able to stack my books everywhere without causing possible harm to a roommate. I move my own heavy stuff, can have diet Coke and salad for dinner if I want to, and generally have a good time. This week, however, has been rather trying.

It rained, which means the local wildlife was driven in through the holes of my rock house. Driven in. Into my house. In the last 24 hours I have encountered 1) a huge, jumping spider; 2) an enormous, jumping lizard--I swear it was the size of a rat; 3) a spooky little albinoesque gecko, currently inhabiting my kitchen ceiling. I squished the spider, made sure the lizard roamed free in the yard, and haven't decided on the gecko's fate yet.

I openly admit I've screamed more than once. While I normally take care of myself, I also openly admit it sure would be nice to have a man around to handle the invading animal kingdom. So there.

And you should obviously name the cougar "Karen."
